A century ago, after a train killed a schoolchild crossing the tracks in Erie, Pennsylvania, community members rallied for a bridge at East Avenue.

The pastor of a church and school two blocks from the tracks, Monsignor Lawrence McBride, led a the twenty year effort to build the bridge. In 1938, the 1,500 foot long structure was dedicated in his name.
